What Does Oil-Free Means For Your Skin?
You may have heard this term quite often – “oil-free skincare products”. And if you get paranoid about the choice of skincare products with “oil” or “oil-free” then this article is for you. I will tell you directly what “oil-free” actually means and what is the science behind it. This will certainly help you to pick the best skin care product for your skin.
Also, don’t forget I have mentioned in the previous blog “ARE YOU CLEANSING IN THE RIGHT WAY?” the importance of cleansing and knowing your skin type. Yes, so if you wish to take your skin test now, head to my website and know what is the type of your skin. (Link to be mentioned).
Ok, so, let’s jump on What oil-free means in skincare products?
Oil-free is the first group of certifications and symbols that we need to look for in skincare products. We cannot ignore this part while buying our skincare products. Contrary to what most people think about “oil-free” is that the specific product or makeup, doesn’t contain any oil. This is one of the biggest myths about “oil-free”
So, now you will ask Vanessa, what does it mean for real…Well, it signifies that the specific product does not have any mineral oil.
Let me make it simple for you and explain to you with some examples- when the brands quote “no mineral oil” it means it does not have any harmful mineral oil that may clog your skin pores and damage it further. Well, you may be wondering how these bad quality oils impact our skin?
Here’s how? Mineral oil is a leftover liquid byproduct of the distillation of gasoline from crude oil. As it is inexpensive and easily available highly-priced and medium-priced – all kinds of brands use it in their skincare products. Let me tell you one fact about mineral oil – it is more expensive to dispose of mineral oil back to the environment than to purchase it. Mineral oil like – kinds of paraffin, ceresin and other nicknames found on the labels – so check before you buy. These are really bad quality oils that: A. Clog your pores on the skin for it to worsen the skin health further
B. They just create a film on top of the skin avoiding the water from evaporating from your skin. So, you’re having an illusion that that product is working and is hydrating your skin. (For example, Silicon is another compound that’s tricking people into thinking that the product is doing something but it’s not.)
C. With the prolonged use of these harmful oils your skin develops skin issues and becomes thicker as it can’t breathe and pores are clogged
Thus, it is proven, especially when your skin is oily it is prone to acne and these oils’ molecules are bigger than the other fats which in turn clogs the pores. So, if you’re suffering from skincare conditions like acne or are prone to acne then these oils and compounds will worsen the impact. But many companies are manufacturing products labelling “oil-free” and “no mineral oils” but the reality different. Thus, if you are acne-prone then you should look for this symbol (image) “oil-free” – which means this product does not contain mineral oil and you are not using any compounds that are clogging your pores and worsening your acne and not letting your skin breathe.
So, it means that there are a lot of big companies that are asking for a good amount of money for skincare products – say like 1000$ and 100$ for just 50 ML of a skincare product, So, they’re tricking people and not giving the best quality of fats and offering them the cheapest version.
Now, you will ask me Vanessa, so what we should do and what are the options other than this. So, there are alternatives of fats and oils that are affordable, safe and good for your skin. One can choose from them and be aware of what you are using on your skin, as a wrong choice can make your skin damage for long with adverse effects.
ONE IMPORTANT FACT, which I would like to tell you is that the least quality ingredients as fats that we can find in the creams are made up of the highest component of water droplets that are fats dispersed into the water to make active ingredients. Here, it is also crucial to understand that the makeup we apply, like the foundation, blushes, cream, especially the primers we use – if they have active mineral oils then you are damaging your skin already – and if you are using any of like these then you are clogging the pores and not letting your skin breathe.
See, what I mean is that you are using something that does not have high nutritional value for your skin and taking care of skin is crucial as it is one of the biggest organs in our body. (Read more about it here – you can give a link to your e-book here).
Why should you look for the symbol oil-free?

DO WE EVEN NEED A CREAM OR A SERUM OR BOTH ?
Well, many people ask me what is difference between the two or if there is even any. Well …there is and a BIG one!
The biggest difference between a serum and a cream is the formulation and what they are meant for – the Creams are meant to treat the skin type whereas serums are to treat the skin concern.
Creams, lotions and emulsion basically composed of WATER +FATS +ACTIVE INGREDIENTS ( and a bunch of others ingredients that most of the times are REALLY bad for your skin and heath but let’s leave for another blog )dispersed in a solution . The are made of bigger molecules compare to serums and their the main goal of creams is to replenish the skin barrier to protect the outer layer of the skin, which is the upper layer of the epidermis.

On the other hand, serums, have smaller molecules and no fat content, that is why they’re able to penetrate deeper within the skin barrier. That’s why they can tackle skin concerns compared to the cream. In serums, since the molecule is smaller so, the absorption is faster and it goes deep into the skin layers.
